English for Higher Education (EHE)

Study online English program with Health Careers Language Academy (HCLA) at your own suitability.

HCLA provides a comprehensive English for Higher Education to suit you whether you’re balancing work, family or just life in general; we will assist you with your English proficiency for further study or job opportunities. English for Higher Education will facilitate English learning at an advanced to mastery level. All course content is contextualized to prepare students for participating in the health industry. HCLA’s EHE course has been developed to fit into your busy lifestyle with tailored support available when you need it.

This course will be open for 1 year and students can complete the course within the year. The course is a 48 weeks program, and will improve the students’ level of English from a Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR), B2 to C1. Students are required to complete a summative assessment task which will be conducted every 4 weeks, the course has a total of 12 summative assessment tasks. Students are recommended to engage in 6 – 8 hours of self-directed learning with 2 hours of online teacher support per week. A well-qualified and experienced teacher in teaching English will provide support to the students on a regular basis. Students are advised to use the recommended text books for this course.

  • Assist students in achieving the English language proficiency they need to participate in courses of study leading to AQF qualifications
  • Create study pathways for students whose first language is not English
  • Help students to attain the required levels of English language proficiency to gain professional registration and work safely in healthcare

EHE Part 1

  • Write academic essays that include citation of a variety of source materials and that set out a structured argument
  • Understand the main ideas of complex text on both concrete and abstract topics, including technical discussions in his/her field of specialisation
  • Demonstrate through role playing and simulation the ability to communicate around advanced healthcare topics with colleagues and other stakeholders in healthcare
  • Communicate advanced healthcare and health science information through structured oral presentations
  • Read and understand academic and scientific literature
  • Read and write documents used in healthcare practice such as care plans and reports
  • Use language flexibly and effectively for social, academic and professional purposes
  • Utilise contact with English speakers and the language environment, including communication media, to actively seek out opportunities to learn and use complex language

EHE Part 2

  • Write academic essays that include citation of peer reviewed source materials and that set out a complex structured argument
  • Produce clear, well-structured, detailed text on complex subjects, showing controlled use of organisational patterns, connectors and cohesive devices
  • Understand a wide range of demanding, longer texts, and recognise implicit meaning
  • Demonstrate through role playing and simulation the ability to communicate confidently and express him/herself fluently and spontaneously without much obvious searching for expressions around advanced healthcare topics with colleagues, patients and other stakeholders in healthcare industry
  • Perform oral presentations in accordance with higher education conventions
  • Read, understand and synthesise written work based on academic and scientific literature
  • Implement strategies for effective independent learning in Australian educational and workplace settings
  • Utilise opportunities for interaction and dialogue with academics and professionals to benefit learning

Students will be able to practise the four language skills (Speaking, Listening, Reading and Writing) throughout the duration of their course. Grammar and vocabulary will be incorporated in the study.

Constructive, reflective and personalised feedback on overall performance and during study will be provided to the students on a regular basis. Recommendations on improvements will also be given to students upon completion of summative assessments. Students will be required to upload the completed assessment tasks on the Knowledge Hub which the teacher will mark, and upload with feedback.

Teacher led tutorial sessions and student support will be provided for two hours per week.

Students will be required to take a pre-study English test to determine their current English level prior to the commencement of the course.

A formal test result such as IELTS, OET, PTE & TOEFL will also be taken into consideration.

This online program will be open for 1 year.
